This is just partly right. Boiled Potato has zero fat while Soya has quite a bit of fat. Infact my trainer made me have a boiled potato every morning in my good old days of gymming.Soya has protein and Potato has only carbohydrates. So I thought of making a perfect meal of protein, fat and carbs . So here goes the recipe

Ingredients:

1) Soya Granules(Ruchi) : 1 cup

2) Boiled Potato(with salt) :2

3) Ginger Garlic paste : 1 tsp

4) Cumin(Jeera) Powder : 1 tsp

5) Chaat Masala : 1 tsp

6) Green Chillies: 1 finely chopped

7) Lemon Juice : 2 tsp

8) Salt,Pepper and Sugar : as per taste

9) Cream (Optional) : 1 Teaspoon

10) Bread : 2 Slices

11) Bread Crumbs/ Rava(Semolina)

12) Boiled Green peas/cabbage/carrot (with salt)

13) Oil : 1/2 tsp

Method

1) Boil 4 cups of water and bring to boil. Add salt to the water so as to just about flavour the granules. This should be approximately 1 teaspoon.Put in Soya granules into the boiling water and cook for 5min. Remove from fire drain excess water and wash with cold water. Squeeze out all excess water and keep aside

2) In a wide bowl mash together the boiled potatoes,boiled peasand/or carrot and/or cabbage, soya granules,ginger garlic paste,cumin powder,chaat powder,chillies,lemon juice,salt,sugar,pepper and cream.

3) Soak the bread slices in water , squeeze out water and mash them along with the soya-potato mixture. This binds the mixture.Check all seasoning again at this stage and add as desired.

4) Make palm size tikkis/flat cylinders and roll them over the rava/breadcrumbs. You can make bread crumbs by toasting bread pieces and grinding them in a mixer.

5)Now since this is a low calorie dish, get a non stick pan on the stove and add 1/2 tsp oil to it. Take a half cut onion and use the flat end to spread the oil evenly on the pan. Now cook the tikki in this pan on a low flame with a cover. Flip till both sides have browned well.

6) Serve hot with green chutney

PS : Please ignore the shape of my tikkis :)

Shaadi Chronicles - 2

On the Gtalk window at 11 am when both of us are usually busy cribbing about long meetings
R : Love You

Me:???

R : Sorry Wrong Window

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

As I land on a Friday night on the much awaited weekly flyback to meet R after a week

Me: Hi Sweetie, Missed you and am so glad to be back!

R: You know Ismail got eliminated,Thank God Tanaaz and Bakhtiyaar are saved !!!

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

After shopping for loads of low calorie stuff

R : You know right both of us are like super fat now

Me: Yeah.. This day has people getting all their academic books out ,praying to the goddess to give them 'buddhi' and calling the neighbours home for 'vetla pak'.

So FIL and MIL were called by a Tamilian family in the building for vetla pak . They innocently informed the neighbour that they too had a Tamil speaking member in the family , Neighbour gets excited and forces Husband and me out of our evening beauty sleep to come home and take vetla pak.

As I enter their house, the neighbour-wife pounces on me and starts a continuous chatter in Tamil. I try escaping with the excuse of washing my hands. She follows me quickly to the wash basin and asks me in hushed whispers:

Neighbor Wife(inquisitive look): " Iyer or Iyengar?

Me ( wondering how that matters) : " Ehh .. Iyer"

Neighbor Wife ( concerned look) : How do you manage with the food? Who cooks at home? Must be difficult na with non veg and all? Whenever you are here visit our place, you can have the food you really like.

Me ( Smile Feebly) : Thanks

I shouldn't have just smiled . I wanted to tell her that I love the food at the in-laws place. First, cos MIL is a great cook and she makes everything with great love . Second I really like Bong/Assamese food specially the non vegetarian fare. I do not miss the Tam food cos I never liked it much.

And most importantly however innocent her question might have been, how does it matter if I an Iyer or Iyengar and is that the question you want to ask someone who has come to your home for the first time! What if I wasn't from either of the sub castes? I sometimes marvel at the fact that 60 years post independence such definitions that have lead to continuous division of our society, still matter.

Shaadi Chronicles

R and me walking on the most crowded street of the city
Me to R : I think I need a diamond ring from you
R: Fair Enuf.. Would a girl from my batch say that about a guy from the IIMs.. I doubt if she would. But would the same girl hesitate to date a guy from a lesser acclaimed academic institution.. I think she would.

Why do such biases still exist. Has the society entrenched them in our mind so deeply that inspite of education, awareness and global exposure we get trapped in them..!
Even today the prize catch for a smart, educated and independent girl is a guy from the IIM/IITs who earns more than her. The qualities of supposed intelligence and current/future prosperity override the lesser important qualities of care, understanding and even compatibility at times!

The criteria that the guy has defined for the girl also hasn't changed that much ... working being an addition to fair, slim, beautiful and homely .. to help him have a better life style!I have never seen a guy aspire for a girl who is better of than him academically or economically .

To end with a classic case...

A plump girl with an IIT/IIM background earning a 7 digit salary would still bear the brunt of rejection on account of her weight by most of the guys..
And a plump boy with the same credentials will also be rejected albeit by a handful of girls...
He will most definitely be lapped up by zillions of others!

Jealousy!

I am jealous of women with a face and body to die for without much of effort...
I am jealous of people who own swanky houses by the virtue of rich parentage...
I am jealous of people for whom writing comes naturally and words just flow...
I am jealous of people who can set any dance floor burning without any training...
I am jealous of people who can create music that can make zillions swoon to their tunes...

Finally I am the most jealous of people who are not jealous of anyone !

For people who understand who Marathi..
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TgnFBQCDS2Y

Happiness and R

April 23rd…. The day I had been planning out for six months right from the insignificant clutch to the ultra expensive (strictly by my standards) saris … yes it was my wedding day!!
I had looked at a 100 beauticians before resigning myself rather grudgingly to a mediocre one…was unsure about the venue itself due its unattractive location… had high doubts regarding the decorator… and was paranoid about the living arrangements for R’s family... Yours truly has collapsed by then...
TG goes to KG and manages to whisper ' Jus multiply that figure you quoted by 10'
and as I lay on the floor choking KG in her true style gives me a parting gift ' You guys wear such boring stuff for your marriage..'

Scene 4
DG is now elated ,for she is the lesser affected victim...

Scene 5
3 Girls taking a solemn oath:We will never show our Sareeees to KG!!!!

What I am doing in 2009?

What I am reading( rather have read)...
Interpretation of a Murder- Jed Rubenfeld : Sigmund Freud is one of the characters and revolves around the Oedipus Complex... has a promising start and a very convoluted end...worth a read for an introduction to Freud's theories

Collected Short Stories-Kalki : The translation from Tamil does not sound quite right and the twist at the end of every story is cliched. Yet the book works and how! It takes you back to the freedom struggle, woman emancipation and abolition of untouchability and shows the reader what it takes to be a true leader and a revolutionary! An ideal gift for Muthalik and Co.

Tales of Beedle the Bard - J.K.Rowling : Pls Pls rush to the nearest store and get the Jataka Tales instead... The notes by Dumbledore are quite nice though...

The Japanese Wife - Kunal Basu : After reading this I almost gave up on Indian Authors until.... I read...
Haroun and the Sea of Stories - Salman Rushdie : Alice in Wonderland meets Arabian Nights meets the Indian Subcontinent... Rushdie's first children's book takes you the fascinating world of stories and draws parallels to the political games of the subcontinent... How I wish there was really a Sea of stories ... would love to swim in that ocean forever :)!
Liar's Poker and Snowball is what I am going to pick up next...

What I am watching..
MTV Roadies whatever season or version... It is bitchier, it is uglier and it is in Australia(some saving grace)...Roadies reached a new low yesterday with the girls kicking each other and hurling abuses that would put the Amboli taporis to shame!

Balika Vadhu ... One more saas bahu saga set in Rajasthan I thought... Instead of a black girl a young girl... but this soap has really surprised me ... understated yet powerful performances,a strong storyline with stronger messages and no exaggerated closeups and background music.. Balika Vadhu is here to stay!

Filmfare Awards... Drooled at Katrina Kaif's blazing orange gown and went awwww with A.R.Rahman's ever so unassuming demeanor in the awards...The 'Big'gies and the 'King's should take a quick lesson in true humility from him..

What I am eating...
The same boring unpalatable low carb food... chicken breasts, steamed fish and veggies, protein shakes... Yesterday was an exception though.. went out to treat myself at Banana Leaf to a fare of appam and stew ... and I guess Hell Hath no fury like a Dieting Stomach scorned.. threw up everything in the night!

What I am wearing...
Clothes of smaller sizes... marginally small... still light years away from the elusive small size ... but what the hell!

What I am listening to
Delhi 6- A R Rahman... what else and who else!!

What I am working on....
..............................................................

Jaipur se nikali gaadi....

An inbox full of wedding invites has forced a non traveller and ' i hate dressing up' person like me put on my fineries( if you could call them that!) and travel to distant places ( We Mumbaites believe anything beyond a 10 km radius of Mumbai is far off!!) ...
One of these distant places this week turned out to be the Pink City of Jaipur for dearest H's much awaited shaadi..
My first visit to Jaipur was also for a wedding but I couldn't get time to absorb the city as most of the time was spent in a Dev D type alcohol and smoke haze that precedes every Bakar Gang marriage... (H and me belong to a gang called The Bakars )
The city itself had a very Delhish feel to it... with cycle rickshaws , decent roads , women with lipstick on even in the sabzi market and a nice chill in the air.... what made it different was.. the surprisingly un lecherous men who went about their daily chores without a glance at the pretty women walking on the streets.. the women themselves though decked up had a very innocent and endearing air about them... the streets filled with what I think were Banjarans in absolutely exquisite jewelery talking in a tongue I had just heard in movies...
The bazaars are a girl's dream come true and it was love at first sight with over a zillion items that adorned the shops in the tiny lanes... The Lakhi Jhumkas, the multicoloured gemstones, the kurtis at throwaway prices, the delicate handwoven bed covers, the trinkets oozing of an explosive combination of colours and shapes and finally the grand, bright and absolutely royal ghagras were a delight for the eye and the mind... This was my neverland :):)!!

Now coming to the wedding itself. It was a Marwari wedding in all its splendor and grandiose.. Ladies draped in a riot of colors...rustic and foot tapping Rajasthani music wafting through the air and the graceful dance by the women that can make even someone like me ( 10 left feet) want to move my hips and feet like there is no care in the world... The hospitality was royal to say the least. We were fed like we had just broken a fast and yes we responded with the same fervour!

The wedding ended at 4 in the night/morning ( and I thought only Tams got married at weird hours of the day!) and a certain non groom H provided the wedding a brilliant snory musical score pitching it right for all the important rituals!

The next visit I hope would give me chance to explore the other side of Jaipur... its heritage and architecture!!

My Moment

I crib about working on a 800 slider ppt... ( replacing funda difficult to digest but imaginable).. so 2 things ... the lost clothing and the neatly darned replica of the same that has made a mysterious appearance into the house... DG ( the MBA grad whose clothing has been robbed) tries the replica and fits her perfectly!!

Discussion gets serious... KG whispers " I think she wants to do some kind of black magic... she robbed your clothing to cast a spell on you ... you should never be rude to such ppl! Would declare it as my almost fav tag jus behind 'fav 10 tracks' tag
My top 10 fav literary characters:

1)Karna : According to me the hero of the greatest epic ever!!!Stood for courage, loyalty and genorisity... my dream man!

2)Krishna: He would have been the best politician today...mastermind behind the epic war and then gave us one of the deepest yet simplest way of leading a happy life... karma

3)Jeeves : I dont think I need to elaborate here!

4) Hassan : The sucker of selflessness that I am Hassan stands tall above all literary characters..except Karna maybe who was more believable

5)Scarlett O Hara : This seemingly selfish and cunning lady I believe, is the best example of grit and optimism in the world of literary characters... her last line "After all, tomorrow is another day" in my opinion pips " Frankly speaking dear, i care a damn" for the numero uno spot in the best line in the book competition!

6) William Brown: Ah noone has made me laugh more than him in my school days..Hats off to Richmal Crompton for creating such a lovable character

7)Dumbledore: The headmaster with the half moon spectacles was actually ' the one' in the Potter series..bigger than the protagonist himself .... I dont think the book should ever make a comeback now that he's gone!

8) Claudine : She hated the sports class in St Clares...jus like me!! :)... She was brazen, looked down upon the English sense of righteousness and yet so warm...

9) Tenali Raman and Birbal : One a jester , one a minister.. both of em sharp, witty and funny ...always marvelled at the way they solved their king's problem in the uniquest of ways... they might have existed in reality.. but stories of their wit and intellect have made them unforgettable characters in Indian children's literature...

10)Mersault : The central character of " The Stranger" and my favorite amongst my recent reads... Hrithik in Dhoom made girls drool and SRK in DDLJ made every girl mushy like a swamp ..
Stangely my crushes have always been the untoasted people of the season...

Akshay Kumar as early as I remember got my heart racing in a dud movie called Dhadkan... I remember my cousin calling him a monkey and me defending him fiercely...
Salman Khan in Khamoshi... one of the few movies where he wasnt displaying his bare torso ...melted my heart
A. R.Rahman asking the reporter on national television what the meaning of the word 'muse' was made me go awwwww
Hrithik Roshan's goofy avtaar in Lakshya made me fall in love with him...
and as I reflect why it was not a Hera Pheri, HAHK, or Dhoom which made me go gaga over these stars.....
Well guess that's because the characters they played were designed to have that kind of an effect on the audience and seemed too contrived.. The characters which I liked had one common quality about them ...simplicity and that was very endearing...
Simplicity as it is said is the peak of civilization...
The musical genuis accepting on national television that he did not know the meaning of the word just reaffirms this fact!

The Special Bond

Big Egoes
Large Size
Loud Mouths
Big Arguments
Bigger Fights
Selfish to the Core
Extreme Vindictiveness
Fierce Competition
Big Ambition
Big Risks
Big Decisions
Big Parties
Big Appetite
Inane Jokes
Loads of Laughter
Big Enjoyment
Big Hugs
Long Drives
Long Discussions
Mindless Chats
Nicknames Galore
Promises Galore
Weaving Stories
Common goals
Lots of Adventure
Innumerable Dreams
Loads of Love
.....A special bond!

Salad

My latest obession is fighting the battle of the bulge... I have blown up my entire first salary on joining an upscale gym and have hired a personal trainer ( never imagined my penchant for bollywood would influence me to such great levels)..Endless hours have been spent digging out articles on Raveena'a weight loss diet and Bipasha's exercise regime,Adnan Samis weight loss secret,Sonam kapoor's weight loss formula, Atkins weight lossdiet,Zone weight loss diet,South Beach weight loss diet,GM weight loss diet and what not...Yes the keyword is weight loss:)

So after tons of unassigned consulting hours spent on assmilating data I have come up with a formidable database of low calorie meals and dishes...Btw I haven't lost significant amount of kilos or inches.. . Yet I strive to consume the unpalatable diet that transfomed the Sonams and the Raveenas of the tinseltown in the hope that it would work wonders for me someday.. Here is one semi palatable recipe from my diet...

Fat Free Curd( You can use Amul masti dahi too just has 78 calories in 100 gms)- 1/2 cup
Capsicum - 1 finely chopped
Tomates -2 Deseeded and finely chopped
Onion -1 finely chopped
And add anything else from this list.. raisins, badams(high fat so limited),mushrooms, paneer, chicken pieces, corn,(high carb so beware),olives, pickles, brocolli, cauliflower, boiled eggs(avoid the yolk),cabbage strips, lettuce
Crushed garlic - 2 pods or you can use readymade garlic paste
Olive oil - (optional)
Black pepper Powder
Salt
One Sugarfree pellet
Limejuice or vinegar -1 tbsp
Oregano (optional)
Mint/Coriander leaves(optional)

Procedure:
1)Hang the curd using any old handkerchief for 10 minutes squeeze out the water ( You can just use the curd directly if you want but that will turn the salad a little watery)
2) To this add salt ,pepper, sugarfree tablet, garlic paste,vinegar,mint/coriander leaves, oregano, olive oil and mix well
3) In a big bowl add all the remaining ingredients along with some lime juice
4) Add the dressing
5) Mix well and serve chilled
It might not sound appetizing but trust me it tastes decent enough and fills you stomach!
PS Add very little groundnuts/roasted moondal orchanna/chivda to give it that crunchiness

Strange are the ways of life!

There was a reason why I wanted to do my MBA. Yes, TOI reports on astronomical sums being paid to 25 year ol somethings was one,the other was my experience with a consulting firm called A when I was working for L&T. I was part of the client team and A was there to reengineer our business process.

I was very excited to be chosen in the client team and even more excited to interact with those 25 year old demi-gods from the IIMs and XLRIs of the world. They came in with fancy laptops (yeah 3 yrs back getting a laptop was a dream of every engineer in L&T), they made fancier PPTs and gave seemingly profound insights into our business. They worked furiously on excel sheets and devoured data like hungry dogs.Their graphs and charts were works of art . They made some amazing changes to our existing process by adding ten new processes and they got paid by the hour (Rs3000per hour for a fresh MBA grad). In short I was spellbound!I decided MBA it is and Consulting it is for me!

I got recruited by A through campus placements. I was super thrilled!I was told I would be a part of the supposed backend global team and I would be called an Analyst. Though disappointed I still bravely took up the offer, thinking about the measly client interaction I had being a Marketing engineer in L&T.The folks from A convinced me it was a well thought of decision to put me in the backend team with my domain expertise .Then comes my day of induction and 13 of us bundled up in a room made for 5 people. I dont see a projector, I dont even see a laptop in that room. A confused HR moves around frantically asking if anyone has come to, well ,induct us into the organization. Suddenly 7 of us are taken into a different room. HR pops head again says "You guys are part of the front end domestic business".Just like that I was thrown from their 'well planned decision'of putting me in a back end job to a front end job.So much for a company which preaches about organizational management to 350 of the fortune 500!!! I have experienced royalty as a new joinee in L&T as well as P&G (internship) so this came as a rude shock. I calmed my self saying might have been an unplanned induction program things will get better. Three hours over noone came in and then we had a hurried induction made on a very old laptop. We are then informed that after the induction we have to fend for ourselves. The office cannot accomodate more than 70 people so we need to pre book our seats.I again calmed myself down saying it was just a phase ,I would be on a project soon and things would change.

Three months done.. I still dont have a fixed seat ( ok that's a part and parcel of consulting), cannot make fancy ppts and my fingers do no work magic excel sheets, I have not received a single welcome mail from my service line head ( He is busy getting projects for me) and surprisingly I am still not staffed on a project ,I don't have a boss to report my boredom to and there is no way to know if work is coming in the near future..! I am a useless resource and it is reaffirmed every fortnight as I fill in my time sheet with unassigned hours... unassigned hours in consulting = falling into a deep bottomless pit!

I'm in the very organization that drove me to do my MBA ... and am left wondering whether the organization values the MBA :) ...Strange are the ways of life!

Tagged!

Got tagged by Bala so here I go!Was too long so jus answering as much as I can!

3 JOYS:

1. I liked the movie… and I love the series!

The reason is simple. The basic underlying principle of solid and enduring friendship appeals to me. If there is one word that can describe me perfectly it is indecisive which has lead to most of the decisions in my life being made with what the world thinks is the right think to do and world = Family, friends, celebrities, counselors and all that jazz...
I have never chosen the dresses I wear, its either my mom or my aunt...
I have no specific choices in food, whatever the group wants...
I didn't choose what I wanted to do after 10th or 12th like most of the students...
I didn't even choose the kind of specialization I wanted to do in engineering...
and true to my character I was again on the verge of not choosing what I want to do after engineering..
and then something changed I chose not to go the beaten path of MS in the US and decided to stay back and work with L&T...
I chose to work in a men dominated Sales and Marketing team of L&T...
I chose to pursue my MBA and join NITIE
I chose to join the placement committee and give up the holiday called NITIE...
I chose to pursue Consulting as my career...
And these choices have brought in more confidence than ever because they have been just my decisions with no influences ...
Each one of these decisions have been made after I have talked to myself and found out what I really want and the feeling is great because I love what I do and am successful in it..

Maybe the same thing goes for dressing up .. I have never really had a personal style or taste or wondered what I want to look like..in fact have never bought a dress alone..same for eating..I have never wondered what right for me and what my body wants ..
And I realize maybe thats why I am never confident of what I wear cos I have never involved myself in the decision of what to where and never took a decision on how to look!!
So the resolution is I am going to take tremendous interest in how I look, what i wear, what I eat ! and i am going to make my roomy to go wow on my dressing sense!!

(Phew so much f0r an insipid comment and an equally insipid decision!)

Jis Lahore nahin dekhya woh jamya hi nahi!

Jis Lahore nahin dekhya woh jamya hi nahi!....A poignant story of the dark time called partition.... a partition that stood testimony to hatred, intolerance and fanaticism...thousands attacked and hundreds killed.. a generation rendered homeless with a total loss of national identity...

The story tried to define what home is..it is a place where you were born and bred... a place which has all your precious memories... a place where you feel at peace.. a place you would never want to give up for anything...

I found the play a brilliant parallel to the current sentiment against so called 'Non-Mumbaikars'
I have been born and brought up in Maharashtra. The only other language that I am comfortable with other than English is Marathi. My favourite breakfast is Kande Poha.I know the stories of Shivaji Maharaj inside out.I topped my class in the Xth Marathi Exams.I love the books of PuLa.Whenever the flight arrives at the Mumbai airport and I inhale the air filled with smoke and dust I feel I have come home..I fought for a transfer to Mumbai and when people ask me so 'Where are you from?' pat comes the answer 'Mumbai'...Chennai /Tamilnadu(my so called home town) aren't there in the remotest corner of my mind..So when someone says I'm an outsider...I am hurt and confused. This as much my home as theirs...My ancestors not living here doesn't dilute the fact that I have spent the most precious years of my life here and I feel as much for this land as any 'Marathi Manoos'(Maharshtrian) does...Mumbai is my janmabhoomi and karmabhoomi...infact I would say'Jis Mumbai nahi dekhya woh jamya hi nahi'...

And most importantly I belong to India....whichever part of the country I goto I never feel lost.... the dirty roads, the narrow bylanes, the beggars, the buses, people helping you out with directions, the chai shops and the pan pattis, the sabzi mandis and yes even the lecherous men :).. its all the same...So how can someone stop me from living in any part of the country when the whole is mine !!!!

Home doesn't mean living with the people with the same lingual or religious background...infact it has nothing to do with the people around you or your forefathers or your generations to come...it is a place which you would like to call yours...it is a place where you are most comfortable i... it is a place which you feel you belong to... and noone has the right to take that away from you...cos home is where the heart is!!!
Jeene ke Ishaare!

Subi always teases me that every song that flashes on any channel,my standard reaction 'I LOOOOOOOOOOOOOVE THAT SONG'....yes I tend to like anything that barely manages to qualify as a tune...( I have been caught humming Jhalak Dikhalaja-Himesh...so you can imagine)
But more than the tune it is the lyrics that have always appealed to me and being the mushy emotional fool that I am anything romantic makes me go weak in the knees...
In the last couple of years though very few songs have really made an impact with their lyrics but there is this one song that I absolutely love...'Jeene ke Ishaare'-Phir Milenge...The song in context to the movie has a different meaning but for me it signifies just feeling good about yourself...
The song is dedicated to anything and everything that makes you feel happy, that makes you optimistic in the worst of the situations...at different points of time, different things, different people have done this to me...made me feel nice, cheered me up when I was low ,inspired me and taught me to have fun....This song is for all of those things/people!!<br Today I am able to type this post sitting in Nitie because some Gandhi and Mahadevbhai decided to sacrifice their lucrative careers for it...not just independence but also woman emanicipation, eradication of untouchability,Hindu Muslim Unity...issues that formed the very core of human existence... and I wanted to genuflect...to Gandhism...

But then again...a Narayanamurthy has an Infosys which creates wealth,an Infosys foundation which does social work and an Infosys which now wants equal representation from all sections of society...hasn't he taken Gandhisim a step forward in his own way? And i think of deferring my genuflection ( is tht a word?)

But is he really doing all he can for the society..what about the farmers who die in Vidarbha, what about the malnutrition deaths, what about us performing abysmally on the Human Development Index..
And I wonder am I a rightful heir to independent India?
<img I salute this movement, which opposes the killing of meritocracy. It is easy to say that the country is going to the dogs and migrate to the US, what takes true courage is to standup against this and make sure that you don’t have to migrate. Anyways won’t be able to do justice to this topic…here is an excerpt from the http://www.youth4equality.org which says it all!!!I join this movement and vow to participate in all the rallies happening in my city &request all of u to join this movement because it is for the better future for the generations to come. Lets not get overpowered by the politicians and their agenda!!!

About 100 of our friends, student and alumni of India's best medical colleges joined by IITians have been without food for last 5 days at AIIMS in Delhi. Hundreds others were brutally beaten by Mumbai and Delhi police for protesting peacefully. Thousands of students, doctors and software engineers have taken to streets in Kolkata, Bangalore and Ahmedabad under the scorching summer sun. They are fighting for a cause that affects the whole nation. Doesn't the bravery and sacrifice of these 20-something youths from the best engineering and medical colleges of India make you feel ashamed?? Well friends, each of us will fight for a cause that affects us individually, but, it is only the brave, the courageous, who stand for a cause that affects others also.
Why we oppose reservation?1) It is going to kill meritocracy, and hence destroy India's image as a technology hub.2) It is dividing India into caste lines which our freedom fighters and social reformers fought so hard to eliminate.3) It is against the fundamental right to equality as safeguarded by the Constitution of India.4) The benefits of reservation have been denied to really deserving people by the rich and powerful in their own classes. 5) Reservation is just a populist measure used by politicians for electoral gains.

This is not just a protest against reservation. This is to ignite the young minds of the urban youth that you must care for the society, majority of whom are poor and underprivileged, otherwise politicians like Arjun Singh will exploit these weaker section with false promises. It is no hidden truth that the benefit of quotas in IIT, IIM and AIIMS will goto the rich OBCs in urban India while the really deserving backward people do not even have access to basic primary education. What we need is quality and compulsory primary education so that by the time the so-called backward class students come to the college entrance level, they are ready to compete with all. Dont limit the seats in higher education where competition is already cut-throat. Intake ratio in AIIMS is around 1000:1 and 100:1 in IIT/IIMs. So you must raise your voice against this retrograde and divisive policy being formulated by HRD Ministry.
In the end we won't remember the words of our enemies but the silence of our friends. Jai Hind !

To Bappi Da!

This post is dedicated to one of the greatest composers of our times…the person who has given us unforgettable tunes that generations will sing along with…the man himself…Bappi Lahiri!!!
Few fav songs…his songs have fab lyrics too..I mean does he have a hand in writing those???
a) “I am a Disco dancer…jus love this paragraph
Yeh log kehte the main tabhi gata tha jab bol pata nahi tha(Vidu and me jus loved this line)
Yeh paav mere to tabhi thirakte the jab chalna aata nahi tha
Naghmon ki masssti hai meri jawani meian…hai dance meri lahoo ki rawani me!!!(hehehehe…no im not laughing.. People who blindly believe that everything that the person says is true and his/her opinion becomes of utmost importance.
4) And above all they believe that the person is nice and The director did an amazing job of portraying how vested interests are exploiting the chaos in the Middle East for their own benefit. A gripping plot, crisp editing, decent performances and above all very realistic movie!
Compare this to the winner Crash…Very delicate and relevant subject racism. Agreed that the film subtly depicts racism in its various forms, but the movie didn’t really get me thinking. It was just a few incidents put together. Met up with a cool gang of people and I loved the time I spent with them and he was just a part of the group…. We never got too close but weren’t very distant too…

Started off by just acknowledging each others presence at the printer…Moved on to occasional His and byes…. slowly we started hanging out together….even then we were never close…he made me my first drink….still he remained an acquaintance….. he spent occasional nights at my place watching movies.…Just him and me....but our phone calls never went beyond mono syllables….. We had conversations through the night till dawn a couple of times…. still never got too close to each other…. there was always this strange kind of barrier….. But surprisingly whenever I felt low I knew only he could make me fine…whenever I was happy I knew I just wanted to share it with him… but still never felt like kept in touch with him on a daily basis…but still wanted to just keep in touch with him…

And today I just can’t keep the phone down while talking to him… I talk to him in the morning…..talk to through the day…sleep off talking to him…. And still I know we might just stop all of this and still be fine with it…. Maybe it was the lack of my intellectual ability…But I couldn’t figure what the author wanted to convey…. also it was such an unrealistic portrayal of Kerala….the storyline(was there a story?) was incoherent….there wasn’t a single strong well etched character….Just lots of pages full of big words and over description of Kerala…. to add to it Roy’s wit and humor (or the lack of it) coupled with tragedy…. It was like a gas filled balloon. just air and no substance…Basically the book failed to make an impact…Dunno why it got the Booker! Compare this with Life of Pi or Animal Farm both with very simple plots and a lucid style of narration… but get across the message very clearly!

Another characteristic of these books is their dark and morbid setup…I haven’t seen one Modern Indian book with a nice, lively backdrop…be it Ice candy man, Interpreter of Maladies (well the title says it all!) or Equal Music. There is always a feeling of gloom…. there is always adultery…and the inevitable reality of life’Death’…There is no trace of humour anywhere. …Neither slapstick nor wry nor vulgar…none whatsoever!!! In their books India is still not the place moving fast as one of the vibrant, youthful nations of the world…. it is still the same old land of mystery…This is why I prefer books by Chetan Bhagat which might not be literary wonders but very well capture the other side of India….

And the last but the most striking feature is horrendous depiction of sex…They just cannot get it across well…Okie its good that its not raunchy like Ken Follet or Sidney Sheldon (Shobha De’s an exception she rules the world of ‘cheap sex’)…but they always allude to it in a very weird way…Its neither classy nor arousing nor exciting nor titillating…..some times I feel its just there because the publishers told them to put it in……or jus cos every book has it…..

Why can’t we just have nice, simple, honest books like ‘Kabuliwalah’, ’Five Point Someone’ or for that matter epic dramas like’Mahabharatha’…Too much to ask for?!!!!

Thank you B!

Quite an ol post from my earlier blog....but as CAT results are round the corner......here it goes

The IIMs have always been a dream for me. A magical wand, which suddenly transforms you into this extraordinary mortal with smartness, wit and money in a single package. It was the platform that could help you soar the greatest heights in life. I always imagined men and women with unparalleled intelligence being a part of this institute.
A part of this image was shattered when I got an interview call from one of the IIMs.I was shocked, startled, elated and jubilant that an extremely ordinary person like me could be considered to be a part this great institution. My dream was knocking my door and it beckoned me to be a part of it.
Being the laidback and fireless personality that I was, I couldn’t grasp the import of this event. A small part of me yelled out that I needed to go all out for it, but the dominant ‘killer instinctless’ part overpowered it and I drifted into my usual state of lethargy. I never prepared for the interview seriously till M called me up one day. She just said 1 thing “S do you realize that this opportunity might never come back again and this just might be your one last chance to realize your dream “. The enormity and gravity of the situation suddenly struck me. I was a changed person overnight. The small part that was yelling out suddenly surfaced like a large monster and saw me literally burning the midnight oil .I suddenly became aware of the universe around me. The preparation threw me into a sea of infinite knowledge and everyday I used to thirst for more. From Power industry to India’s Fiscal policy, from Lee Iacoca to Sania Mirza, from Intel chips to Hindustani Classical Music, I was exposed to an entire gamut of information. It dawned upon me that there are larger issues in life than just my family, friends, my job or for that matter the IIMs. I started loving this world, which showed me the whole world. It ingrained this new found self-belief and confidence in me. I felt I could conquer the world, now that I was armed with a goal and the means to achieve it! The interview was bad and I didn’t get through; but it taught me, rather made me realize a lot of things
1) The importance of awareness of the environment around you
2) The power of knowledge and its ability to transform a person
3) The gift of Internet which puts all this knowledge at just a click away from you
4) And last but not the least it has made me realize it is the killer instinct coupled with tremendous knowledge and awareness that makes an IIM grad what he/she is. IIM is not a magical wand; it just shows you the right way to use the magical wand that you already have!!!
So thank You IIMB for awakening me from my slumber and ushering the light of knowledge, confidence and ambition into my life. I owe you one!!!!
Love Actually

A very, very clichéd and trite question…. What is Love? …..
At sixteen,I had this huge crush on this very cute guy in my class……we smiled at each other in lectures…..I caught him staring at me quite a few times…..and one day I found chit in my bag saying ‘I Love you’……..at that stage it was ultimate love for me…. the guy I like actually liked me back…..I passed out of school, I felt a little sad that we were parting and my ‘love story ended’….

At nineteen, things changed a little…the guy I liked played great football and volleyball…we used to have loooong chats over the phone… He wooed me in style …took me to the best places in town. …Pampered me with gifts…whispered sweet nothings…I liked being with him…at the end of the day I had someone to hang around with …….it was a sense of security…. I thought ‘this is love…. I can never think abt any other guy like this again’…. I passed out of college, we broke up…. this time I cried for a week and thought about him for 6 months more…but that was it I moved on….

Today I’m Twenty-Three and I know that I really don’t know what love is…
Is it just enjoying someone’s company irrespective if his looks, his status, his background? Is it being mentally and physically compatible…sharing the same wavelength? Is it being with the person who’s always there for you and with whom you can share the all your thoughts, happy and sad…? Is it liking some one with whom you can just be yourself…all pretences, all masks put aside?
At different points of time different people assume importance in my life and I like all of them for what they are and am extremely compatible with them…yes I have some special people in my life who pull me up from the lows, are jubilant in my happiness…But I know I’m not in love with them…I do no get the feeling of wanting to be with them forever…Im not self less enough to love them without expecting something in return…Im really waiting to experience that emotion where I can love someone and not expect them to love me back….. And maybe then I’ll really be in ‘love’.

Kabhi Phool Dena, Manaane Ke Liye
Kabhi Door Rehna, Sataane Ke Liye
Aur Kabhi Kabhi Khamosh Baithe, Baahon Ke Sahaare
Sooraj Bujha Na, Saagar Kinaare
Phir Raaton Ko Chaand Ugaana
Vaise Pyaar Ke Naam Pe To Yaaro Sab Hua Hai
Ab Yeh Pyaar Bhi Ho Jaye Bas, Itni Dua Hai
Bas Itni Dua Hai

Janmo Ke Vaade, Har Baar The Kasam
Kabhi Jaan Kehna, Kabhi Kehna Sanam
Aur Sau Sau Baar Yeh Kehna
Hamein Pyaar Hai Tumhi Se
Le Aayenge Ham Taare Zameen Pe
Jo Kahoge To Jaan Bhi Denge
Vaise Pyaar Ke Naam Pe To Yaaro Sab Hua Hai
Ab Yeh Pyaar Bhi Ho Jaye Bas Itni Dua Hai

....Things that bring a smile to my face!

Whenever I feel low...I jus rewind bak to my college days....they were undoubtedly the most happening days of my life( yeah yeah i know its the most happening time in everyones life)....here are a few incidents that really make me smile....
1)Sunny in Mane's class...
Mane: Paminder aka Sunny, what is darlington pair?
Sunny: ( looking a lil stunned...shruti as usual tryin to prompt him...sunny starts of confidently) Darlington pair is two transistors in ebababbababbejwebebeb( jibberish)......
Yes sunnny actually said tht....man it was hilarious!!!!!and Mane's expression was worth a million bucks!

2)The joggers park incident where I still maintain that I was wrongly accused of producing a foul odour...it was tht ol man!!!! BUt I know the golden gang insists im framing the poor ol man and the famous lne'Sheee Sam farted' and ' Smelly sam smelly sam..what are they feeding you'!!!!

and the winner must have tol it a thousand times to thousand pppl but it still rocks
3) Rahul and me at ullus place....jus entered his place....we take a seat on his couch... Ullu emerges from the bedroom...after exchanging pleasantries suddenly ullu notices sumthin on the couch.....A GENTS UNDERWEAR....
Shoots accusing glances at Rahul and me asks us in an irritated tone'Whose is it?'
This statement infuriates Rahul no end and then comes the statement of the decade.....
'You B&#@%^ ...you think the first thing that we do when we go to people's houses is remove our underwears and throw them on teh couch!!!!
.....heheheheh this one makes me smile in the lowest of my lows...ahh I miss those college days!!!!

Preachings.....

Watched Apaharan yesterday…. wasn’t the greatest of movies…but definitely worth a dekko and it really got me thinking……
It’ a story about how an ordinary guy gets sucked into the world of crime with the politics of Bihar as the backdrop…no its not ‘Satya’ or ‘Vaastav’ revamped…
The movie beautifully portrays how deep-rooted the nexus is and how every person in the chain is corrupt…. and no matter how much an honest man tries to do(superbly enacted by Mukesh Rishi) it really doesn’t make a difference………..
After watching the movie I thought this is what socialism does…where people calling themselves champion of the poor criminally live off the tax payers money…this is what democracy does.. Calling themselves the representative of the masses politicians become gang lords rather gang lords become politicians…this is what unaware (mind u not illiterate) masses do…We should kill our socialistic model……….
But then on second thoughts capitalism will encourage more of this….rich become richer…poor become poorer…..the disparity grows….and as is inherent in Human nature the imbalance has to be balanced out……and it will ultimately lead to the same crime and violence….
So what can we really do to change all this…….has it reached a state where there is no turn back……should we as a nation give up because it is a Herculean task to clear this mess…..
I believe that we still have hope…it is not a economic model that is going to take us through…its socio-political reform …I believe that we need a revolution…. I think young educated people should enter politics….. I strongly believe it our responsibility to give back to the society, the nation that we live …..Smart, aware youth can really take dynamic, unbiased and radical(in the positive sense) decisions for the society and nation at large…….
I agree cases like Manjunath’s murder do scare away the youth from this path…but a revolution does need to have sacrifices…would we have got our independence without the thousand lives lost in it………Im so sure that each one who lost his life thought the cause was worthy of it………
Well as of now there seems no sense of urgency as was in our independence movement…but what is happening now is even worse…. India is growing richer only in a few pockets while the others are still lagging behind………and if left ignored this snake would raise its ugly hood and mayhem, corruption and violence will be the order of the day..
I sincerely believe that if all of us take at least one step in this direction the giant leap of India’s progress is not far away…
Too much preaching for the day na….yeah even I am bored!

Happy Birthday JD!

Saw him at a bus stop first…
Instinct told me a guy not to trust…

He was arrogant, self centered, pompous and flirty
Took potshots at me and thought he was so witty!

With each passing day I hated him more
Bitched about him till my throat grew sore….

He called me fat, I called him pansy,
It just looked like we were never meant to be….

Well things didn’t change;
